In Kilo-Arba’a-wa-Nuss (also known as Ezbet El-Haggana), a severely congested urban settlement located in Cairo’s outskirts, the resident community consisting of Egyptians and Sudanese suffers from lack of quality education, inadequate sanitation and poor health conditions. Although both communities share similar problems, they are segregated and xenophobic incidents occur regularly.
The overall objective of this action is therefore to contribute to community cohesion through building national and local institutional and community capacity to jointly improve living conditions regarding education, hygiene, environmental health and primary healthcare for Egyptian and migrant communities in Kilo-Arba’a-wa-nuss. Through the identification of best practices and the provision of technical assistance, this pilot project will strengthen the Government of Egypt’s (GoE) capacity to understand and adopt a more integrated, inclusive and participatory approach to local planning and community development – i.e. to engage local government, civil society and communities (both migrant and Egyptian) in defining local development priorities and approaches, delivering assistance, and evaluating and sustaining activities.
