In the past decades, Peru became a country of origin and it is estimated that approximately 3 million Peruvians currently reside abroad. However, in recent years, Peru has been attracting immigrants and returnees due to the country’s steady macroeconomic growth. This new migration context is creating new challenges and the Government of Peru (GoP) has taken important steps to improve migration management. One of those steps has been the creation of a specialized working group composed of governmental institutions with the aim of strengthening migration management in the country. This specialized group is led by Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the support of the International Organization for Migration and, among its main activities, has developed a work plan in order to develop a sustainable an integral approach to the management of migration. In order to support the implementation of the specialized group’s work plan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested IOM’s technical and financial support and has developed the project proposal: “Strengthening Migration Management in Peru”.
The project’s main objective is to improve the management of migration by strengthening the work of the specialized group through the development of specific strategies. The strategies will focus on the implementation of migratory agreements and social security benefits for migrants.
