This project will aim to strengthen the capacities of the Nicaraguan Directorate General of Immigration (DGME) to manage records of ingoing and outgoing travel documentation of Nicaraguan citizens and foreign residents by means of digitalization. With digitalized records of travel documentation, Nicaraguan citizens and foreign residents in Nicaragua will be provided with more efficient and accelerated services; it will reduce the number of documents required for administrative processes, ensure security and safekeeping of documents, provide greater control of immigration clearance procedures at Nicaragua’s southern border, and help protect the rights of migrants and travellers.
Through training of government officials, supporting the DGME migrant centre and launching an awareness campaign to build the capacity of officials in managing migrant flows, the project will also contribute to ensuring Nicaragua complies with its responsibility to protect the human rights of extra-regional migrants thereby reducing their vulnerability to harm.
