This project builds on the extensive experience by IOM in Peru in conducting studies and statistical research on Peru’s migration patterns in partnership with Peru’s National Institute of Statistics and Technology. It proposes to conduct a study on the impact of remittance flows on the socioeconomic development of the nation and poverty alleviation in order to provide meaningful and accurate information toward the future development and implementation of strategies to promote the productive use of remittances in Peru. The findings will be presented at a conference to be held in Lima. In order to develop the study, the project will collect existing data and analyze the reliability and accuracy of the information from various sources: Peru’s Central Bank, financial institutions, the National Directorate of Migration and Naturalization, the National Institute of Statistics and Technology (INEI by its Spanish acronym) and surveys. Moreover, this project will analyze past and current national legislation on remittances, government programs, financial services and products and other initiatives (e.g. co-development projects in Peru) and will interview relevant figures in order to produce a set of recommendations for policy makers.
