Research Project on Trafficking in Chile

The project intends to contribute to the development of counter-trafficking policy in Chile by way of a research assessment that will analyze the dynamics of trafficking in human beings in eight of the country’s regions. Specific areas of focus will include human trafficking routes and trends, types of criminal structures and their degrees of sophistication, the methods used by traffickers to recruit, transport and exploit their victims, and the linkages between human trafficking and related crimes, such as migrant smuggling. The project will also assess the causes and consequences of human trafficking both for the individual trafficked person and for society at large; it will depict the vulnerability profile of trafficked persons, and analyze the socio-economic situation in both host and origin countries (gender, family or sexual violence; power relations, inequality, etc.). Following the assessment of human trafficking dynamics in Chile, the project will review existing institutional capacities to address this problem, including the legislative framework, and make recommendations on how Chile can improve its overall counter-trafficking response. The project is will be funded by the 1035 Facility and the Government of Chile.
