With irregular migration on the rise in Mauritania, as witnessed by the recent increase in the number of stranded smuggled migrants, the Government of Mauritania (GoM) requires assistance to undertake a coordinated and efficient fight against this phenomenon.
IOM will support the GoM to better address irregular migration and smuggling through assistance to assess and improve national capacity to respond to irregular migration, including the development of a national migration management programme framework. At the request of the GoM, these activities will be considered for initial funding through the IOM 1035 Facility, and will complement support to the voluntary repatriation of stranded migrants that IOM will conduct in the context of its Assisted Voluntary Return programme.
By project completion, the following results will have been attained:
- A practical and detailed report will be provided to the GoM, presenting conclusions and recommendations resulting from the assessment of the national response to irregular migration and smuggling,
- A fully-articulated GoM migration management programme framework will be developed. This will be shared to interested donors.
- Specific training and capacity-building activities for government officials, supportive of the emerging management framework, will have been completed
