The focus in South Sudan is moving towards stabilization and resilience of the economy. IOM has a wealth of experience in diaspora engagement for public sector reform, knowledge transfer and promotion of affordable remittance flows for development through its programmes such as Migration for Development in Africa (MIDA) and initiatives to reduce money transfer costs for migrants. The project aims to use IOM’s expertise to: conduct a study on remittance flows to and out of the country; support draft policy initiating legal reforms to better regulate the sector; and, make money transfer costs for remittances more affordable. A mapping exercise of diaspora remittances for investments will be useful for establishing or revising the foreign investment promotion policies and diaspora investment. The findings can then be used for the establishment of a diaspora investment fund that could be managed by the diaspora associations through an agreed framework supported by the government. IOM will collaborate with relevant government agencies, the diaspora and money transfer institutions to ensure ownership.
