Protection and Assistance to Vulnerable Migrants
National

Since 2009, the Government of Mauritania has made tremendous progress to enhance its migration management capacities, nonetheless, many challenges remain. The country’s main priorities include the establishment of new border posts, the development of an integrated system to collect migration-related data, the organization of migration management capacity-building activities, and the better protection of migrants’ right.
Migration flows are particularly complex in the cities of Nouadhibou and Nouakchott, where migrants transit before continuing their journey to Morocco, and beyond.
The objective of this project is therefore to strengthen the migration management capacities of the Government of Mauritania, in compliance with international human rights, to: 1) better address migration flows in the above-mentioned cities; and 2) enhance the protection of migrant’s rights.
This objective will be achieved through the following three main axes:
1) Capacity-building of national authorities (national police, navy and coast guards) in relation to the assistance and protection of migrants;
2) Migration profile in the city of Nouadhibou in order to map and understand the migration routes, migrants’ social status, their gender, age, needs and vulnerabilities, if any;
3) Mechanism to enhance the coordination and foster the dialogue among local authorities from Nouadhibou and Nouakchott, the civil society and United Nations agencies with regards to the protection and assistance of migrants in vulnerable situations.
