This project stems from a request by the Government of Croatia to assist in responding to the need for research on labour migration flows from Croatia to Italy. The research focused on the shipbuilding sector which has been identified as a priority concern due to significant losses of skilled workers. It has highlighted major patterns of Croatian migration to Italy, with particular attention to shipbuilding, its root causes and impacts on economic, social and migration policy of both countries. The research has identified the size and profiles of labour migration flows and how to best match interests of both countries in dealing with it.
The overall objective of the project will be to ensure a better understanding of this phenomenon and to elaborate recommendations for future programming and policy decisions as well as to establish a research agenda for new directions of work on cross-border labour mobility.
