Further to a request by the Government of Bolivia (GoB), specifically from Dirección General de Migración (DIGEMIG), IOM has provided assistance in the development of a project to enhance Bolivia’s Migration Information System as part of a broader modernization effort that the GoB is carrying out to improve migration management.
In the framework of the free transit regime in Mercosur, many neighbouring countries are eager for these modernization efforts proposed by the GoB, as this will allow Bolivia to interact in a more efficient way with these countries.
The following two components will be included in the project:
(1) Information and knowledge systematization of the existing entry and exit database including the digitalization of paper records to complete the information available digitally (there has been a lack of digitalization of migration registers of many year), and
(2) Transfer of the aggregated migration data, systematically processed by the Immigration Department (DIGEMIG) with the support of Universities and Research centres, to other public receiving and information generating entities such as: Ministry of Tourism and National Institute of Statistics with a view to creating up to date migration information and trends, ideally to be used for informed policy making decisions.
