Establishment of a Tri-Lateral Dialogue between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on Migration Management within South West Asia: Initial Phase

This project will initiate a Tri-Lateral Dialogue on Migration (TLDM) among Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, serving as a forum for informal discourse focused on developing comprehensive and compatible national and sub-regional migration management strategies. The TLDM aims to help these governments develop a common orientation to manage migration by enhancing mutual confidence and identifying policy priorities and further practical measures within a comprehensive, balanced and collaborative framework. The TLDM will be characterised by its non-binding and practical character. The TLDM aims to achieve two essential results.

-In the initial phase, as supported through this 1035 initiative, through informal and structured discussions, the identification of a migration framework built upon a set of common understandings outlining fundamental shared assumptions and principles to guide migration management in the region. Specific joint policy and technical workshops will complement the dialogue features in this initial phase.

-In the follow-up phase, under separate sponsorship, the improvement of migration management in the region through the implementation of bilateral and collective measures on a comprehensive range of migration issues drawing on the experience of three governments and IOM expertise in migration management. Activities of the follow-up phase will be defined and implemented upon successful completion of the initial phase.
