The project has sought to fund a third farm workers’ survey to generate data which can provide meaningful input to the planning of multi-sectoral and integrated strategies to assist farm worker households that have been affected by the land reform programme.

The third farm workers’ survey and stakeholders consultations have targeted farms that were covered by the second Farm Worker’s Survey in 2001 (over 1,320 farms), spread over all the commercial farming areas of Zimbabwe. This will involve physical visits by trained enumerators and administration of questionnaires to an approximate number of 23,713 farm workers.

The results of the third farm workers’ survey will be the basis to address the modalities it will recommend to assist the farm workers, specifically with regards to the areas where intervention is mostly required such as: a) resettlement in the newly acquired farms; b) employment opportunities through new settlers or self-employment; c) retirement, and d) repatriation of those farm workers who wish to return to their areas of origin, including to neighbouring countries like Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi.
