The proposed project aims to build government capacities in developing reliable and comparable migration data for more evidence-based policy development in the South West Indian Ocean region.
While migration to and within the Indian Ocean region has been increasing in recent years, available information and data on migration patterns are lacking. A better understanding of current migration trends is essential for policymakers to formulate interventions harnessing migration’s beneficial effects and mitigating its negative consequences.
IOM will support three Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) Member States (Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles) to develop national migration profiles that will serve as a basis for comprehensive, coherent and coordinated data collection and processing as well as more evidence based policy making in the field of migration. This initiative is complementary to the ISLANDS-IOC programme, which aims to contribute to an increased social, economic and environmental development and deeper regional integration in the Eastern Southern Africa-Indian Ocean region through the sustainable development of Small Development Island States (SIDS).
