The objective of this project is to contribute to the economic development of Suriname through the support and engagement of the Surinamese diaspora. The project will be implemented in close collaboration with the Government of Suriname through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Consular Affairs and the establishment of a Diaspora Unit. Connecting with and identifying capacities and skills within the Suriname diaspora are pillars of this initiative.
Project outputs that will contribute towards this objective include the registration of the Surinamese diaspora worldwide, and the documentation of the skills and resources as well as diaspora return interest and plans to support the development of Suriname.
Key activities will include program presentations and mobilization workshops for further dialogue on development initiatives. Capacity building initiatives will build competencies to manage a project’s online database after the project’s completion.
The active diaspora website and functional database will also enhance the communication between the GoS and the diaspora, and it will be a one-stop shop for diaspora and diaspora organizations to access information on investment opportunities and development initiatives within specific sectors. This website will continue to exist after the completion of the project, through the Diaspora Unit within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will ensure its sustainability and use beyond the life of the project.
