This contribution allowed IOM Dominican Republic and Haiti to initiate and strengthen technical cooperation actions for migration management between the two countries. The Bilateral Technical Commission on Migratory and Border Affairs was rekindled to provide a full-island forum for problem-solving in key areas, supported by IOM Technical Cooperation in the following areas:
1. Legislation on improvement of deportation procedures (with NGO involvement);
2. Completion of a survey of Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic;
3. Haitian migration policy;
4. Provision of information to migrants on rights and responsibilities; and
5. Counter-trafficking actions.
The funding augmented current input from the Government of the Dominican Republic, the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, World Bank and others, and encouraged further support of proposals for full technical cooperation implementation already submitted to the European Union, World Bank and others.
