This project is intended as an initial investigation into the interrelationship between environmental degradation and population movements in Mauritius, in the broader context of how this linkage affects human security (inter alia individual, health, food/water, economic and political).
The project aims to mitigate the effect of climate change and environmental degradation on impending migration through awareness raising and capacity building of national institutions in Mauritius. A national assessment to better grasp the phenomenon in the local context will be carried out and new employment opportunities and sustainable development for vulnerable people in Mauritius will be explored, namely in the ecological sector (recycling, ecotourism, renewable energies etc.). The project will also strengthen the capacity of relevant Ministries and other national institutions to better harness employment opportunities in the environmental sector. Through the implementation of pilot initiatives of job creation, the project will also benefit Mauritians interested in participating in the pilot project.
