The African Union and its Member States recognize that inter-state cooperation and dialogue strengthen their migration management capacity and increase the harmonization of policies, laws and strategies on migration related issues.

In this vein, the objective of this project is to contribute to the identification of a common African position on the Global Compact on Migration (GCM) through continent-wide policy dialogue and exchange of national and regional perspectives and effective migration related practices.

As part of the Global Compact on Migration preparatory process, the Pan African Forum on Migration (PAFoM) will bring together the African’s Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Africa Region Member States1, the agencies of the United Nations and the civil society organizations, among others. The aim of this forum is to promote a dialogue and provide a medium for the African governments to share information on the current migration dynamics, trends, patterns and newly emerging issues. The PAFoM will serve as a migration policy-based research effort to support and complement the Global Compact on Migration regional and thematic consultations as outlined by the modalities of the resolution.

Finally, it will avail the Member States the opportunity to guide the drafting of a common African position and make recommendations to find durable solutions to the migration challenges in Africa – to be discussed at the 2018 African Union Summit.
