Strengthening the Integration Process for Returned Migrants in El Salvador (PIRE)

El Salvador has one of the highest number of returned migrants among the Central American countries. The Government of El Salvador and other key institutional actors have therefore recognized the importance of providing assistance to all Salvadorian returnees and creating multi-sectorial opportunities to guarantee their successful reintegration into society.

This project will contribute to the integration process by harmonizing the existing practices and strengthening relevant stakeholders’ efforts. The technical and operational capacities of public institutions in the selected government departments will be enhanced to provide better services and assistance to migrant returnees.

Project outputs that will contribute towards this objective include:
1. Strengthening institutional capacities for the reception and orientation of Salvadorian returnees in order to improve coordination and reinforce referral mechanisms. Training workshops will mainly target governmental officials working in pre-positioned help desks.

2. Recommendations and lessons learnt for the integration of returnees, based on existing mechanisms and best practices in other countries, particularly Mexico and the Northern Triangle, which experience similar migration patterns and significant return flows.

3. Promoting services for returnees’ reintegration through a wide communication campaign.
