This capacity-building in migration management project has assisted Pakistan in its participation in the planned “Dialogue and Technical Capacity-Building Programme in Migration Management for Central Asian Countries”. The countries that the foreseen programme targetted include: Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan; all having strong economic, political and historical links. Pakistan, as a neighbouring country to this group, shares some of their concerns and is affected by migration patterns in the broad region. At the request of the Government of Pakistan, financial and technical assistance, as well as logistical support, was made available to the Government of Pakistan to enable their participation in key activities that will be undertaken as part of the Central Asia initiative, namely: technical workshops, joint consultations on migration and study tours, as well as to facilitate the procurement and translation of key policy and technical documents.
This project also resulted in the identification of the most important future areas of cooperation between the Government of Pakistan and their neighbouring countries in regional migration management, and the best role for IOM to assist in this regard.
