This project has provided South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs with an interpretive guide to the new Immigration Act 2002 and extensive immigration training standards in the areas of admissions control, immigration law enforcement, border control, and management of immigration affairs. The project has also assisted the Department with a step-by-step briefing paper to support its efforts to develop the training standards into a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)- accredited training programme, and attempted to identify a credible tertiary institution with the capacity to deliver such a training programme.

While there remains considerable work to do before the Department of Home Affairs has an accredited training programme for its immigration officials, some progress has been made to establish a foundation on which this process can move forward.
