The eight IOM Member States in Central America share common issues and problems related to migration management. While capacity to respond to these problems differs from country to country, there has been a common need for access to expertise and technical services in addition to those available within the existing national structures.
Through this project MRF San Jose has engaged in a one-year initiative with government counterparts in the region to assess and plan for the best approach to serve these needs through an envisioned regional technical cooperation center. The countries of the region were provided with the opportunity, individually and in group meetings, to share ideas and agree on regional and national priorities, and to provide direction to IOM in this initiative.
The project resulted in the delivery of initial technical cooperation services, and a formal plan for the institutionalization of such a technical center, with the endorsement of all concerned governments.
