The Government of Zambia has identified as a priority the improvement of its border management systems and has encouraged IOM to assist in building capacities in this regard. IOM has initiated assistance (1035 Facility funding in 2002) to GoZ through the provision and management of an expert assessment of needs, systems and supporting legal and regulatory framework features for management of cross-border movement in Zambia. The assessment has resulted in a detailed report and structured workplan, with guidance for further investment.
Building on this assessment, IOM has supported the GoZ in piloting a data system for international entry/exit at the Lusaka International Airport and for alert list management, including software development or purchase, and equipping of checkpoints with appropriate hardware, software and networking. At the request of the GoZ, the requested USD 37,205 allocation from the 1035 Facility in 2005 will allow for coverage of costs beyond original estimates for deployment of the pilot system, and related training.
