With increasing migration movements in the region, including significant irregular migration, and elements of human trafficking and smuggling, the improvement of border management, including the documentation of international entries and exits, has become a high priority for the new Government of Liberia (GOL). In response to written requests from its Minister of National Defence and based on initial findings from a technical assessment mission held in May 2006, IOM will begin to assist the GOL in improving national migration management capacity by: 1) supporting the implementation of a Personal Identification and Registration System (PIRS) at Robert’s International Airport; 2) conducting migration management capacity building training sessions for airport and other officials with migration management functions in their attribution; 3) providing guidance to ongoing governmental efforts to rationalize border management functions and mandates of national agencies, including the insertion of migration management training as a component of the ongoing Security Sector Reform (SSR) Initiative.
