Labour Migration

Completed
Bangladesh is a major labour sending country. On average, 275,000 migrant workers leave Bangladesh for foreign employment each year through regular channels. There is a general concern that these job seekers are often ill informed and ill prepared for what awaits them in the receiving countries. However, by empowering the migrants with knowledge about migrants’ rights, skills, and information about the migration process they are better equipped and prepared for their overseas contract and more likely to benefit from it. Therefore this one year project proposed to begin in 2006 January aims at enhancing the level of skills of potential migrants so that their migration is beneficial and that their rights are ensured. At the same time this project also aims at strengthening the capacity of the civil society organizations particularly the specialized NGOs and migrant workers’ associations working for the benefit of migrant workers in Bangladesh.
